Trigger Point Injections

What are trigger point injections? Trigger point injections are injections that are utilized to manage pain. Tiny knots can develop along the muscle, causing pain. In some cases, people will experience referred pain. This means that while the pain may be somewhere else, they may feel it in other parts of their body. Getting an injection for muscle pain may help you to experience relief better than what you would get from any other pain management solution.

What Is in The Trigger Point Injection?

Back trigger point injections can include saline, corticosteroids, botulinum toxin, or a local anesthetic. This will all depend on what is needed to treat your pain. Your doctor will work with you to get the best results possible. If you have any questions about the ingredients of the trigger point injection, you will want to ask your doctor before beginning the procedure.

How Do Trigger Point Injections Work?

Before getting a cervical trigger point injection, your doctor will give a complete exam. They will help to determine if trigger point injection will help you. This is usually done after conservative treatment has not worked on your pain or if you are only experiencing minimal pain relief. To start the procedure, your doctor will do the following:

  • Locating the trigger point. Your doctor will do a physical exam to locate the trigger point that is bothering you.
  • Ultrasound or x-ray. You will then get an ultrasound or x-ray of the area. This will help your doctor to avoid hitting an area that should not be damaged during this procedure.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting. The next step will be cleaning and disinfecting the area to be injected. If this is not done, the infection could be a complication of this procedure.
  • Giving the injection. The injection will then be given once the area has been prepped.

What to Expect After the Trigger Point Injection?

After a trigger point injection, you may be curious about what you should do to recover. You can expect that you will have some bruising in the area after the injection. You may also feel pain, tenderness, and soreness in the area. This should go away relatively quickly. If you have any severe pain, redness, or signs of an infection, you will want to speak to your doctor quickly. While the infection is rare, it can happen.

After you have recovered from your trigger point injection, your doctor will recommend that you do exercises and stretches to help maximize the results of your injection. Some doctors may even recommend physical therapy to help further manage your pain. You can speak to your doctor about aftercare and what you should do to promote healing.

Trigger Point Injections for Pain Relief

After you have learned what trigger point injections do, you may want to speak with your doctor to see if they are right for you. A consultation with a doctor will help ensure that this method of pain relief will help relieve your ongoing pain.
