Just months after his shoulder surgery. Al Roker revealed that he had diagnosed with prostate cancer. “It’s good news–bad news kind of thing,” he said on Today. “Good news is we caught it early. Not-great news is that it’s a little aggressive, so I’m going to be taking some time off to take care of this.”

“It was a great relief,” he said about his prognosis. “Look, we’re not out of the woods … but for a first start, this is terrific news. I’m gonna be up for, as a lot of people who live with cancer, up for lifelong testing to make sure this doesn’t come back.”

During his appearance on the show, he also made sure to thank all of his fans for their support. “The outpouring of love and support that I have received from all of you, including the prayers,

have been truly heartening. And this Thanksgiving, I’m truly thankful for all of you,” he added.

February 2021: Al Roker encourages others to get tested for prostate cancer

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Al Roker explained that he went public with his diagnosis. To show the importance of prostate cancer screenings.

“I went public with this because — it’s a simple test, but a lot of guys, you know, we’re wimpy. We don’t like going to the doctor. And this is an easy test to do,” he explained.

“I want people to get their prostate checked. Especially if you’re a man of color, get your prostate checked. It’s not that big a deal and it can make a big deal. He said, noting that African-American men are 50% more likely to diagnosed. With prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from it.

March 2022: Al Roker Celebrates his bypass surgery anniversary

In 2022, Al Roker marked 20 years since getting his bypass surgery on social media. “Hard to believe it was 20 years ago today, I wore these size 54 Levi jeans to my #gastricbypass at 340 lbs. and here I am today,” he captioned a video of himself holding up his old jeans.

“It’s still a struggle but I’m never going back,” he vowed. “I have setbacks and struggle every day, but I never forget how far I’ve come.”

November 2022: Al Roker opens up about his blood clots

In 2022, Al Roker missed his first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 27 years. He recovered from blood clots in his leg and lungs that sent him to the hospital.

Ahead of the special, he thanked everyone for their support on Instagram. “So many of you have been asking where I’ve been. Last week I was admitted to the hospital with a blood clot in my leg which sent some clots into my lungs,” he wrote.

“After some medical whack-a-mole, I am so fortunate to be getting terrific medical care and on the way to recovery. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers and hope to see you soon.”

Though he was released shortly after, he has since returned to the hospital, with his daughter giving a brief update on social media. “Thank you to all the wonderful friends and family who have reached out,” his daughter Leila wrote. “We really appreciate it.”

May 25, 2023: Al Roker health toughest one yet

The Today anchors surprised. Al Roker appeared on the program. He talked about his health. He said when he might come back to the show.

“I am doing fine. It is good to see all you. I’m going to be honest. I’ve had many replacements, knee replacements. It’s not a big surprise,” he said of his May 9 surgery. “This one has been the toughest one yet. Because they had to take out the old one, which had some complications, and then put in a new one.”

Earlier in the month, he made a virtual appearance. On today to update viewers on the status of his recovery after undergoing knee surgery.

“This one is a little more complicated because it’s what they call a revision. It was a replacement of a replacement. So, they had to take stuff out, put stuff in, so it was a bit of a bear,” Roker revealed at the time. “So, we’ve been kind of hanging out. Chilling out, not doing anything — which I know, a lot of people find hard to believe, but in fact, that is the case.”

May 30, 2023: Al Roker returns to Today and says his knee is ‘all good’

Al Roker had knee surgery on May 9. He came back to the Today show. It was his first show after the surgery. He went to the weather board. He talked about national temperatures. He did this like he always does. His colleagues were happy to have him alongside them again.

Look who’s here! Mr. Roker, we are so happy to have you back in our studio. Today co-anchor Guthrie said at the top of the show before joking, “You’ve got a brand-new knee! Does it still have that new knee smell?”

“I don’t want to go there,” teased Roker, dressed in a light tan suit. “We’re putting it to use. … It’s all good, all good.”

The way Al Roker battled against all odds in his life. he had achieved so much and gained the respect for his adversaries is remarkable. He found surgeries difficult to tolerate.
