Ketamine for Addiction: What to Know

Ketamine Addiction Treatment

Two clinical trials, one on cocaine addiction and the other on alcohol dependence showed that individuals prescribed ketamine along with therapy had better results compared to those receiving therapy alone.

For individuals with cocaine addiction, ketamine was administered via IV for five days in addition to five weeks of mindfulness-based relapse prevention therapy.

For individuals with alcohol dependence, ketamine was administered via IV in the second week after a five-week session of motivational enhancement therapy.

In both studies, researchers concluded that ketamine reduced the likelihood of relapse or reinitiating addiction.

Ketamine is still under research to determine its impact on addiction. However, it has the potential to alter how the brain processes cravings, motivations to quit drug use, and behavioral responses. Ketamine therapy may also enhance the effectiveness of behavioral therapy, a crucial element in overcoming addiction.

To be effective in treating addiction, ketamine must be administered under the supervision of a medical professional. Recreational use can lead to addiction or other harmful effects.
